The Roxbury Institute Announces In-Network Cigna Access

The Roxbury Institute today announced that it will be in-network with Cigna, effective October 15, 2026, for eligible patients seeking specialized lipedema care in California. Dr. David Amron and Dr. Aria Vazirnia, along with The Roxbury Institute Surgical Center in Los Angeles, will be in-network with Cigna as of that date, subject to benefits verification, medical-necessity determination, and prior authorization requirements.

Unlike traditional plastic surgery practices that treat a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive conditions, The Roxbury Institute maintains a dedicated focus on diagnosing and surgically treating lipedema. This specialized focus has allowed the Institute to develop highly specialized expertise, protocols, and patient care programs designed tailored for individuals living with lipedema.

Lipedema is a chronic, often painful adipose tissue disorder that disproportionately a ects women and is frequently misunderstood, underdiagnosed, or mistaken for obesity despite its significant physical and emotional impact. For years, patients have faced not only delayed diagnoses but also significant insurance barriers when seeking specialized surgical treatment.

“As specialists treating lipedema every day, we see firsthand how delayed diagnosis, administrative hurdles, and limited access to knowledgeable care can profoundly a ect our patients’ lives,” said Dr. Aria Vazirnia. “Expanded access through Cigna represents meaningful progress for patients living with lipedema. Improved access to specialized treatment is an important step forward, and we’re proud to be part of that progress.”

Coverage remains subject to verification of individual benefits, medical necessity determination, and prior authorization requirements. Patients living outside California may also be eligible, with out-of-state coverage confirmed on a case-by-case basis. The insurance team at The Roxbury Institute verifies patient benefits prior to consultation.

“For years, I have made it my mission to help insurance companies recognize lipedema as a legitimate disease and improve access to care for women living with the condition,” said Dr. David Amron, Founder and Medical Director of The Roxbury Institute. “For too long, patients have faced unnecessary barriers, delays, and financial uncertainty while trying to access medically necessary specialized care. This milestone with Cigna marks an important step toward removing barriers for patients seeking specialized lipedema treatment, builds on the progress we’ve already made expanding in-network access through Aetna for our California and Utah surgeons, and reflects our continued commitment to pursuing broader in-network relationships with major insurance carriers to create more pathways to care for lipedema patients.”Patients with Cigna PPO or EPO plans interested in lipedema surgery at The Roxbury Institute are encouraged to contact the practice to schedule a consultation and begin the benefits verification process.
